If you are unfamiliar with the fictional story of Johnny Kudani, here is how he got his start:
Nina loved being the wife of Johnny Kudani. It's not because he was overly handsome, although he certainly wasn't bad to look at. It's just that he was always so kind to her. He has made her very happy throughout their marriage.
Johnny just finished taking a sip of coffee when he spoke, "Nina, I'm thinking about self publishing my next book."
"Why?" Nina replied.
"Because I've read that the payouts are much higher for self published authors."
"But Johnny, you don't know anything about how to publish a book. That's the great thing about having a publisher. They take care of all that for you." Nina said.
"Yeah I know. But my publisher owns the copyright to my first three books. It wasn't until I went to bestseller status that I was able to make a better deal." said Johnny.
Nina felt like Johnny would be betraying the publisher. Think of all they have done for us, she thought. She felt like it would upset the apple cart.
"I don't know, Johnny." Nina said after a pause. "I'm worried that you'll bite off more than you can chew. The great thing about having a publisher is you can concentrate on what you do best - write!"
"Well, I'm not going to make any rash decisions." Johnny said. "I won't do anything until I learn enough self publishing that I feel comfortable doing it."
"Okay Johnny! We'll take up this discussion again in a couple of days. By then, you may start another book project and it'll keep you so busy the self publishing idea will have to be put on the back burner."
"Perhaps." Johnny just left it at that.
Johnny really wanted to boost his royalties. These publishers really screw the authors, especially when they first start out. Because publishers own the copyright, they get movie rights and any other benefits that go along with ownership. No wonder more and more people are turning to self publishing.
